The Destroyer of Pleasures: May it not Cause Eternal Destroy

Saiyeduna Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه reports that Rasulullah ﷺ said (meaning): “The son of Adam never encountered anything more severe since Allah created him than death and death is the easiest of what is to come.” Musnad-e- Ahmad

Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said (meaning), “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures,” by which he meant death. Tirmidhī

None of us know exactly where when our life’s timer would stop. Most days are spent without discussing death. But it should not be that most of the days are spent without the remembrance of death!

Alhamdulillah, no day of a believer is spent without the remembrance of death. He prays five times a day. Through the blessing of prayers, at least once in a day, the remembrance of his death pops up, the thought of preparing for the Afterlife emerges.

This is about the thought which the Hadith refers to as ‘destroyer of pleasures’! Most probably no other words would be so meaningful in defining death to warn the living people! That is why in the Hadith, death has been referred to as ‘the destroyer of pleasures’.

Indeed, death is the destroyer of all worldly pleasures. Thereafter, the events that are coming: the grave, the resurrection, the Meezan (i.e. the weighing of the Book of Deeds), the Bridge over Hell – one by one – are more severe.

There is no salvation for those who will waste the life of the world! For them, at first, death comes as the destroyer of pleasures of the world, more serious punishments consecutively arrive and there is no end to those; moreover, they are intensifying. The torment of the grave, the miseries of the Resurrection Day, the terrible and dreadful punishment of Hell … May Allah protect us! Aameen. Death is not only a destroyer of pleasures of this world for the unbelievers but also a cause of eternal sorrow and pain in the Afterlife! Allah says:

Meaning: And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits – He will put him into the Fire to abide eternally therein, and he will have a humiliating punishment. Sura Nisa: 14

On the other hand, for a believer, death is only the destroyer of pleasures of this momentary world, and Alhamdulillah, the gateway to eternal peace and happiness in the Afterlife! Allah says:

Meaning: But those who believe and do righteous deeds – We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide forever. For them therein are purified spouses, and We will admit them to deepening shade. Sura Nisa: 57
